A Great Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.
Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, uninterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week this will be the last year that they go shopping together.
Heavenly Father, remind us eac day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love. Amen.

Work as Minsitry

All that we do is worship to God, including, and maybe especially, our work. Here is a neat organization which aims to encourage working Christians in the Boston Metro area.

Christian Truth and the discovery of a new hominid skull

I reproduce here a nice article which. amazingly, the BBC actually published!:

'What does it mean to be human?'

By David Wilkinson, Lecturer in theology and science

Anthropologist Desmond Morris suggested the discovery of a human "hobbit" on Flores would force many religions to examine their basic beliefs. The suggestion provoked quite a reaction.

"The existence of 'Mini-Man' should destroy religion", claims Desmond Morris.

I can't help thinking we've been here before. Indeed, Richard Dawkins, the evolutionary biologist, still cannot understand why religion survived Darwin.

Yet as science progresses, despite the decline of allegiance to traditional Christian churches in Western Europe, religion continues to grow world-wide in many different forms.

This should not surprise us. Contemporary science, far from solving every question, often highlights the big questions which are central to human existence.

This is the case with the discovery of LB1, the 18,000 years old specimen of the new species Homo floresiensis.

The find of this so-called "hobbit" on Flores island excites me both as a scientist and a Christian theologian, for it poses the big question of what it means to be human.

'Frankly naive'

People have always been fascinated with this question, in particular what makes humans different.

LB1 becomes part of this contemporary question alongside developments in science such as human cloning and the growth of artificial intelligence where what it means to be human is seen in Star Trek's Mr Data and Kubrick's AI.

Some have tried to separate human beings in terms of physical, mental or genetic characteristics.

The trouble with this, as LB1 demonstrates is that these are simply often different points on a spectrum rather than absolutes.

While some religious people believe humans were created 6,000 years ago, or view humans as the sole possessors of souls, it is quite frankly naïve and ignorant to characterize the depth of all religious thinking in this way.

Natural world

Within the Christian tradition, some have suggested that the key to being human is our ability of rational thinking, freewill, our moral sense or our capacity to face our own death.

The fact that God may have created many other species in the universe does not diminish the relationship he has given to human beings

However, the overwhelming view which can be found in the early chapters of Genesis, is that human beings are defined in terms of relationship, and in particular their relationship to God.

Being made in the image of God is about being given the gift of intimate relationship with God, and a certain kind of responsibility in the natural world.

That human beings are special in terms of relationship, allowed early astronomers such as Huygens to speculate about other worlds without having nightmares about his Christian faith.

The fact that God may have created many other species in the universe does not diminish the relationship he has given to human beings.

Care and compassion

Further, as many historians have pointed out, the Christian worldview encouraged the growth of empirical science - the universe had to be observed to see what God had done.

A cast of the 18,000-year-old 'Hobbit's' skull

The diversity and unpredictability of the cosmos or natural world was therefore a reflection of a God who gives the universe the potential for extravagance.

Finally, the gift of responsibility brought with it the need for care and compassion to others, the animal kingdom and the environment.

So as a Christian, in common with many other religious believers, I don't see LB1 as a threat to religion.

I am fascinated with what more we might find out about the diversity of the natural world.

And if Homo floresiensis still exists then they need to be treated with respect and care whether the anthropologists class them as human or not.

I still see the special status of humanity in the gift of relationship with God, a relationship affirmed in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

After all, hobbits were never a problem to the Christian orthodoxy of a certain JRR Tolkien.

Heroes

Every now and then, come back here and click on this link. I hope like me that it will take you to your knees in prayer, not in rage but in quiet abjection and plead salvation for those whose hearts can carry such hatred as few of us previously might have imagined.

My apologies for not having blogged for such a long time. It started off as a busy patch that morphed into a dry time that eroded into a kind of funk. I suppose that trying to view the world and be erudite about it just gets hard after a while. Lets review mankinds track record while I've been 'away'
- genocide resumed in Africa between Tutsi and Hutu
- Sudan learns how to stmp on it self destruct button with genocide
- The 'war against terrorism' has degraded into 1,000 US soldier dead in Iraq - not to mention the other nationals lost there.
- Our President and the John Kerry are throwing mud at each others military records via third parties while the big issues goes undebated
- Chechen rebels consider murdering children a valid form of expression
- shall I go on? No I'm not depressed - just unimpressed.

The world needs to hear the real authentic voice of biblical Christianity now more than ever. Nowhere else is sanity tobe found than in the message of God humbling himself to win our affections back, then submitting himself to our brutality as a scapegoat- for us! And then demonstrating Himsefl as God through a historical acts of resurrection that transformed the lives of all those who witnessed it first hand. For those of us who weren't there He gives us the free gift of salvation and the Holy Spirit living and transforming us as our proof and guarantee.

My prayer this night is that the church - starting with me - will humble ourselves - as He did, and will pour out our lives as an offering of reconciliation and selfless love to the world that will only despise until it falls in love with Him. Father, may Your will be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven - and start inside my heart, my family, my church. my state, my country, my world.

April 14th 2004

I haven't blogged for over a month now - not because life hasn't been interesting - but because it's been SO interesting. I'm thrilled to report that God is good, and continues to answer prayer. I so wish that I could share the experienced truth of that with non-believers. I wish I could share with them that Christ is alive and active and changing lives all around. How easy it is to be a Christian when you see God working. How odd Christians seem to non-believers when they just don't see it.

Back in January Dad underwent surgery to have a high-tech pacemaker fitted to alleviate the arrhythmias he was experiencing. This was due to a change of cardiologist, who just so happened to be a European expert in this field. The relief it brought Dad, and the freedom from fear, we understood as a gracious act of a merciful God. It's not God's fault that Dad had a heart attack 15 years ago, but it is merciful that Dad has survived those 15 years - grace.

Dad was diagnosed with Colon cancer just 7 weeks ago. The oncologist said unless surgery was performed Dad would about a year to live - and an undignified death. This is not God's fault - the world is a sick place because of corruption, sin and pollution. Death was not in God's plan or in his creation. If this diagnosis had happened in December, the British National Health Service would probably not have fitted Dad with the pacemaker - more grace.

Dad's heart attack meant he has been on warfarin - a medicine which thins the blood. Because of this his colon tumor bled, which alerted Dad that something was wrong. As a direct result, the cancer was caught early - while still a Stage 1/Dukes B cancer. A single tumor that had not spread beyond the colon - yet more grace.

Dad's oncologist just so happened to be an Army Colonel, at attachment with the National Health Service. Dad is an old soldier so they could talk on the same wavelength, as it were. Grace again. Colonel Keith Galbraith is a gift from God, let me add.

The anesthetist gave Dad a 60% chance of making through the cancer surgery because of his week heart, and then added that the post-operative recovery period was more dangerous than the surgery - the first 3 days would be critical - especially the first 12 hours. Indeed the anesthetist had not decided to allow Dad's life-saving surgery to go ahead - until 12 hours before the surgery. Finally the all-clear was given for Dad's surgery to go ahead - the anesthetist would take the risk to his statistics and reputation if Dad was prepared to take the risk (as if he had any sensible alternative!) - grace upon grace.

Dad survived the surgery, the first 12 hours, the first 3 days and it's been 2 weeks now. Mercy.

Lesson's I've learned?
1) I asked everyone I knew who was saved to pray. 5 or 6 churches were praying for Dad. Pray works. Don't ask me why God responds when we pray in His will - but He does.
2) God was working. Dad is a changed man because of this episode. My Dad was always a rascal - and although a spiritual man, not always exclusively a man of Christ. That's changed now. He asked me to pray with him every night as I was finishing my daily visits with him - a first in my life and his. He openly recognizes that Jesus Christ has caused his healing. Dad called upon the name of the Lord, and acknowledges the Lord answered him.

Dad is well. God is good, and I am thankful and full of praise for Him.

Mind and Body work together

BBC NEWS | Health | Trauma linked to coronary disease

An interesting study which re-enforces that there really is no boundary between what the ind experiences and what the body experiences. In Jewish thought a person was simply a person - there was no notion of dividing us up into pieces. It was a result of Greek thought that people were considered to be body, mind, soul, spirit. While the Bible does take on some of these notions in poetic writing, there is no basis for us to separate ourselves into these components. Only at death does the spirit separate from the body, and then only to be clothed in a glorious new resurrection body on Resurrection Day!

We begin to get insight into God's jewels

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Diamond star thrills astronomers

So now we have more scientific evidence that God is a Person of massive, fantastic abundance. How like God it is to design stars to blaze as cosmic fireworks and then fade into staggering jewels thousands of miles across.

I do believe that when the end of the ages comes and the new heaven and the new earth is created, it will be a vast playground of awesome experiences for us who are saved to enjoy in our resurrection bodies. We can barely grasp what it will be like, but God gives us some 'downpayments' in the here and now to assure us. Planet-sized diamonds do not surprise me. That's power.

Almost as staggering is that the God of the cosmos cares about the relative trivia of my life, and yours. That's love.

How NOT to share your faith

BBC NEWS | Americas | Christian question alarms flight

In the story above, I admire the pilot's zeal to share his faith. However, he did so in a way which was not sensitive to the context or the people he was witnessing to. When we share the wonderful, life-changing news about Jesus Christ we must always do so in a way that lets people know that we are caring and considerate and that we mean them no harm.
The context of a pilot talking to the people at his mercy in an airplane is probably not the right time or place. Our society highly values the notion of personal freedom and as Christians in the workplace we must ensure we have the rapport and relationship with an individual before we can effectively share Christ. Non-believers will judge our lifestyle before they'll listen to our words.

Five Fingers of Prayer

Thanks to Corey Johnson for putting me on to this:

This is beautiful - and it is surely worth making the 5 finger prayer a part of our lives.

1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty."

2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.

3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

5. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you." Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself.

By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively. Should you find it hard to get to sleep tonight, just remember the homeless family who has no bed to lie in.

British Monarch is an Australian Fork-Lift driver - King Michael

Ah, the aweet irony of it all. Just when the Auzzies are trying to ditch Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state, we discover she's a fraud and the real King lives in Australia and drives a fork lift truck. Furthermore, I think King Michael seems to actually like his children!
